Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is a type of feeding and eating disorder in which people lose control over eating and tend to consume large amounts of food. If you have BED, you may eat too quickly even when you are not hungry.

Eventually, you develop a feeling of guilt, and shame, and feel deeply embarrassed about your eating habits. To hide the behavior, you may even start binge eating alone. It is important to understand that BED can be a serious medical condition and it is different from the common phenomenon of overeating.

According to the latest Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5, a manual used by clinicians and researchers to diagnose and classify mental disorders, updated in May 2013), binge eating disorder is only diagnosed when this behavior is associated with marked distress and occurs, on an average at least once a week over three months.

Although binging behavior is similar to what occurs in other eating disorders, people with BED usually do not engage in purging by vomiting or using laxatives. Further, uncontrolled eating behavior leads to overweight and obesity problems.

Thus, people suffering from BED are most likely to suffer the health risk associated with clinical obesity including high blood pressure, diabetes, musculoskeletal problems, etc.

Although less common, BED is a severe condition associated with several physical and psychological problems.
