Worldwide Prevalence of Dementia
- According to the latest estimates, five to seven people out of every 100 in the world are affected by dementia.
- In the year 2010, nearly 35.6 million people lived with dementia worldwide. This number is expected to almost double every 20 years, to 65.7 million in 2030 and 115.4 million in 2050.
Prevalence of AD and Dementia by Region
- The latest review of global literature reveals a higher prevalence of dementia in Latin America (8.5 percent) and a distinctively lower prevalence in the four sub-Saharan African regions (2 to 4 percent).
- The prevalence of dementia in various regions worldwide is shown in the graph below.
- According to one latest study from India, the incidence rate for AD was 9.19 per 1000 person-years (no specific age group). The incidence rate of AD was reported to be significantly high with increasing age.
- In the US, in the year 2013, an estimated 5 million people aged 65 and older have been diagnosed with AD. Nearly 200,000 individuals under age 65 are known to have early-onset AD.

- Clinical data suggests that in the US, older African-Americans and Hispanics are more likely to develop AD than older whites.

By Gender
Women are more likely to suffer from dementia and AD than men. The reason for this disparity may be explained by the fact that on average women live longer than men.
- In the US, out of 5 million people with AD in the age group of 65 years and more, 3.2 million are women and 1.8 million are men.
- Evidence for Europe also reports a higher prevalence of AD among women as compared to men. In the age group of 70 to 74 years, the prevalence of AD is reported to be 3.2 percent among men and 3.8 percent among women. The incidence of AD shows a rising trend in both men and women. However, women show a higher prevalence than men in any age group.
