Your doctor may prescribe you antidepressants and anti-manic drugs to manage your mood swings. These medications can cause side effects, such as dizziness, low blood pressure, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and urinary retention.It is therefore recommended that you should be vigilant during the course of treatment. Here are few things you must follow or not ignore while under treatment for bipolar disorder
Don’t Ignore Serious Side Effects
Some mood stabilizing medication scan cause serious side effects, such as skin rashes, blood disorders or liver problems. Antidepressant drugs may increase cardiovascular risks in some people. You should contact your doctor immediately, if you notice any serious side effects.
Go for Periodic Blood Tests If Suggested By Doctor
Lithium (a mood-stabilizing medication) treatment is known to cause low thyroid levels in some people. If you are prescribed lithium, your doctor may recommend you to go for periodic blood tests to check your thyroid levels.
Avoid Driving Vehicles
Most of the medication prescribed for treatment of bipolar disorder cause drowsiness or dizziness. It is recommended that you avoid doing certain activities such as, driving a car.
Watch for Urinary Problems
If you are prescribed lithium, you must not ignore any urinary problems. Lithium is known to cause toxic effects on kidney which may further lead to chronic kidney disease.
Read your Prescription Carefully
People who are taking antidepressants are also be given a mood stabilizer. Antidepressant when taken alone, increase the risk of switching to manic episodes in bipolar disorder. Therefore read your prescription carefully to understand the different medications that you need to take at the same time. Talk to your doctor, if you have any questions.

You must keep a track of how you feel from time to time. Maintaining some kind of record in the diary or mobile app, about your moods, sleep patterns or other factors can help your doctor to understand how well you are responding to the treatment.
